Shared Housing

For some, it is harkening back to their college days. For others, it is a financial necessity. But for many, it’s a way out of loneliness and a way to remain independent. It’s called Shared Housing. Homeowners remain in their own homes, but share rooms in exchange for rent and/or needed assistance.

HOME SHARING: WHY NOT?

Home providers, home mates, and experts in the field offer their personal experience and insights on the best ways to find and share a home.

As Annamarie Pluhar points out in her book, “Sharing Housing, A Guidebook for Finding and Keeping Good Housemates,” there are five essential benefits to sharing a home with someone other than your family, especially as you get older. They are:
1) Cost
2) Companionship
3) Help and Security
4) Health and Well-being
5) Sustainability.

MEET MY ROOMATE

From Arizona, CNBC’s Jane Wells reports the fastest growing demographic in roommates is senior citizens.

A RETURN TO HAVING ROOMIES

In 2014, Sterling Michaels did a PBS News Hour report about older women turning to communal living much like Blanche, Dorothy, Rose and Sophia did in the old NBC sitcom “The Golden Girls.”

The show is from the 1980’s, the PBS story from  2014, but the ideas are even more relevant today.

21st CENTURY GOLDEN GIRLS

NBC’s Lester Holt reported on the shared housing trend in 2011 – and found strong resemblances to the well-loved television program from the 1980’s –   The Golden Girls.
